At 29,035 feet (8,850 meters), I am the tallest mountain in the world. The Sherpa people know me as Sagarmatha and the Tibetan people call me Jomolungma. Ever since I became known as the tallest mountain on Earth, everyone has wanted to climb to my highest peak. Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first to reach the top on June 29, 1953. Many years earlier, in 1924, a climber by the name of George Leigh Mallory disappeared while trying to climb to my highest point. His body was just found last year in 1999. Did he reach the top? Only I know the answer to that question.
I am Mt. Everest.
Join Rich and Kelly as they travel through my valleys and over my neighboring mountains on a quest to reach the base camp, which is a temporary home for the talented and brave who dare to make an attempt to reach my summit.
See: Trek 2 Everest for beautiful photographs of the Himalaya Mountains and Sherpa villages that they pass along their way to Base Camp. See Everest Base Camp for photographs of the members of the Mountain Link - Expedition 2000 Summit team and the fun that Rich and Kelly had with this talented and friendly group, See Puja Ceremony for a view of the Buddhist ceremony held before the expedition team may begin climbing from Base Camp. ...and finally see 2 Trek Home for more beautiful photographs as Kelly and Rich head back down to 9140 feet.. For a map of our trek through the Khumbu Valley, see 2 Go Maps: Everest Region. For personal accounts of our trek, see Rich's Travelogue and Kelly's Travelogue.
