Our last full day on the Galąpagos Islands began at the beautiful Isla de Jaime (better known as James Island). While we took our morning tour, our hard working crew was finally able to enjoy a brief bit of relaxation as they played soccer on the Island's soccer field. We are happy to report that our crew prevailed over the enemy ship's crew. One of the highlights of Isla de Jaime was our morning snorkel with sea lions. Graceful in the water, they look like big bears, just far more elegant and sleek.
Team Samba celebrates their victory in futbol!
Three oyster catchers, with their distinctive and long orange bills, walk the beach of Isla de Jaime.
Galąpagos hawk rests in the thicket of a tree. At one time, they were so prevalent on the Islands, and unafraid of man, that pirates would report that as they would hunt one hawk, another would land on the barrel of their rifle.
A fur seal hangs out on the lava rock. While it can be difficult to distinguish the fur seal from sea lions, the distinguishing features that we learned to recognize are their eyes, nose and beautiful fur.
A natural lava rock bridge caused by centuries of relentless surf, and the capriciousness of the flow of lava from the volcano.
The brightly colored sally crab.
Now, this is a sea lion. See, it's easy to tell the difference.
Rich relaxes as we sail away from Isla de Jaime.
Our friends, Fritz and Fran have traveled the world together. They also travel the USA from tennis tournament to tennis tournament in their motor home. We can only hope that at their age, we are as active, vibrant and fun as they are, although we clearly will never be as funny as Fritz.
Along Buccaneer's Cove, one may find the "Praying Monk" formed from volcanic rock. Can you see him?
Another view of Buccaneer's Cove, so named because it served as excellent shelter for the anchored vessels of pirates.
After a great day on Isla de Jaime, we made a brief visit to Isla Bartolomé |
