Barcelona is an exciting and colorful city with fascinating Modernism architecture, a lively and festive atmosphere, starving musicians and artists, colorful markets and competitive futbol teams. Luckily, we were able to experience all of this and more during our visit! A little geographical and cultural background: Barcelona is the capital of Catalunya, a region of Spain which has strived to maintain its own personality and culture. The region has its own language which is called Catalan, its own flag, and its own spicy flavor. Barcelona was the perfect host for the 1992 Summer Olympic Games. We should know, because we were there. Barcelona is known for its big festivals. We were fortunate to return to Barcelona during the largest and most important festival of all, La Mercé, which celebrates the patron saint of Barcelona who was known for her love of animals.
Crowds gathered to enjoy the Parade of the Giants which marched and danced around the streets of Barcelona, including the main pedestrian thoroughfare, Las Ramblas. This head is almost as big as Jonathon's!
The National Palace and its fountains are a breathtaking sight. Barceloneans and visitors alike gather here to enjoy the beautiful dancing fountains. Tonight, the Placa Espanya will be filled with over a hundred thousand people to enjoy the spectacular festival fireworks.
La Mercé firework display was a spectacular show. Choreographed to music from five continents, the show featured colorful and innovative fireworks as well as street lamps that exploded with confetti.
La Boqueria produce, fish and meat market is a lively and festival place any day of the year. We enjoyed a great cup of cafe con leche and Spanish tortilla (fluffy omelet filled with potatoes) up at the bar with a bunch of the local guys and walked around taking in the sights and smells of the colorful market.
Another entertaining and sacred activity in Barcelona is Futbol. |
