From Varanasi, India, we traveled for two days by bus to Kathmandu, Nepal, where we met our good friends Mike Dunnahoo, and Robert Link and Steve Greenholz, all three of whom will be attempting an assault on the summit of Mt. Everest.
Mike Dunnahoo and Steve Greenholz, with Kelly watching on, organize their climbing gear in advance of departure from Kathmandu. Mike and Steve are 2 of the 4 non-guide climbers on this expedition, which is one of 3 American teams taking a run at Everest this year.
Mike and Steve took us around Kathmandu for a little sightseeing. This is a photo of Swayam Bhunath Stupa, more commonly referred to as the "Monkey Temple", for all of the monkeys that inhabit the grounds. The setting is dramatic, as it sits high atop a hill and is approached by a formidable, and long, set of stairs.
The stupas in Kathmandu are all very attractive and character-full. The colorfulness of the surrounding prayer flags, and the all-knowing eyes looking from above, create a mystical place of worship.
Kelly turns the prayer wheels at the Monkey Temple (notice the monk in the background). When walking around a stupa or turning prayer wheels, clockwise only is the order of the day.
After the Monkey Temple, we visited another impressive stupa, Boudhanath Stupa, on the other side of town.
The view from Boudhanath Stupa.
Some of the group on the Everest 2000 expedition at Boudhanath Stupa. In addition to the 4 clients that will be attempting to climb the summit, there are ancillary groups treking/climbing to less difficult, but still very respectable, destinations in the Everest region.
Continue with us as we begin our trek into the Everest Region to the Everest Base Camp. |
