November 13, 1999--Scottsdale, Arizona, USA Well, the Good Doctor is now a married man and yet another reunion occasioned by a wedding is drawing to a close. It has been a great several days here in Phoenix/Scottsdale, seeing people we have not seen in months, in some case years. It was particularly great to see and spend time with Doc and Lissa, Dave and Maureen, and B. Andrew Dye. (Catching up with Ben, Schaeffer, Jim, Birkle, Matt, and others that I had not seen in years was also a hoot. ) As per usual, Doc was in grand form, spinning tales with a descriptiveness and humor that few others can match. Andrew was, once again, staffing the "Need Desk," all for the benefit of his friends to whom he always gives a 110% workmanlike effort (particularly when serving as best man). And our time with Dave and Maureen is always a joy. A lot of memories and good times with all of these great friends...it is funny, perhaps sad, how careers, geography, and circumstance all conspire to pull people apart and away from each other, allowing them to enjoy a closeness once shared in abundance only fleetingly and from time to time. November 15, 1999--Las Vegas, Nevada, USA I genuinely like this town. Of course it helps that the last two times I have visited have been to see my mother who now lives here, and such a joyous occasion is bound to favorably color one's impressions. And tonight Kelly won $160, so that helps as well. But the city and the casinos are fun. The vibrancy, the people, the bustle, the color, the grandeur, the excess; all contribute to make it quite the experience. This ain't Kansas. Spending time with my parents is always great, reminding me (not that I need reminding) of how great it was growing up, and what wonderful parents they have been to me and my bro. My mother always amazes me with her contagious smile and laugh, and the heart she so willingly gives to those close to her. I cannot wait to see her and my father again at Christmas, which this year will be held in Atlanta at the home of my brother. Kelly and I are so fortunate in that we have so much to look forward to, and such wonderful people to share it all with.
But the road calls...and it is time to move on to Central America. |
