Now this was very cool. As you know, Lillehammer, Norway, just a short train ride from Oslo, was host to the 1994 Winter Olympics. Earlier, in 1952, Oslo was also host to the Winter Olympics. In both instances, the ski jump was held here at the Holmenkollen Ski Jump. In the off season it is one of Oslo's biggest tourist attractions, allowing you to go to the very top, look down the ramp, and imagine the agony of defeat.
In this photo taken from downtown Oslo, you can see the distinctive ski jump perched high on a hillside overlooking the city and the harbor. It looks like a big, white, wishbone.
Vigeland Park is Oslo's great urban space. This large park is home to dozens of sculptures from Gustav Vigeland, Norway's greatest sculptor. Think of it as New York's Central Park, but with great art, and without the troubled youth, crime, grafitti, and other unsavory elements of NYC's underbelly. The focus point is the towering monolith, which can be seen in the center.
Detail of the monolith, which is a sculpted column of writhing bodies representing all of humanity.
You know this anguished fella. While he is now a virtual pop icon, few know the artist responsible for creating this well-known masterpiece--aptly titled "The Scream.". Well, it was none other than Edvard Munch (pronounced "monk"), Norway's impressionist master. This can be seen at Norway's National Gallery (free admission).
We really liked this painting by the Norwegian painter, Harald Sonberg, which wonderfully depicts winter in Norway.
Travel with us to the western coast of Norway as we cruise north on the Coastal Steamer.
