After the Marta shake up, we went out and continued our exploration of Budapest. We took a stroll through City Park and stumbled across this statute of Anonymous . Anonymous (whose name is not known) wrote the scrolls which reveal the history of Ancient Hungary.
The streets of Budapest are filled with vendors selling Eastern European trinkets. Some of you may be receiving these colorful items as holiday gifts.
We spent a day at Szentendre, the oldest town in the forests of the Danube Bend. Szentendre is a quiet little artists town with lots of tourists, yet lots of charm and tradition.
Some of the charm of Szentendre.
One of our favorite buildings in Budapest is the Parliament Building which sits on the Danube river in Pest. This gothic masterpiece was completed in 1905 (modeled after London's Parliament) and cost as much to build as it would to build a village for 30,000 people. You will find that the money was well spent, however, when you gaze upon the twenty-nine staircases, twenty-seven gates, the gilded panels and domes, the massive marble columns and the elegant general assembly hall, seen on the right.
A stay in Budapest would not be complete without a night at the elegant State Opera House. We had the fortunate opportunity to see the famous Puccini opera, Madam Butterfly. It was lovely. The ticket prices for the opera were so inexpensive that even we could afford to sit in these fabulous box seats.
The young Madam Butterfly marries Lt. Pinkerton.
If you liked Budapest, Hungary, you will love Krakow, Poland. |
