From Berlin, we headed to southern Germany to drop in on our friends, Jens and Sabine, who live in Stuttgart. We met Jens and Sabine in Egypt, spending time with them in each of Aswan and Dahab. Even after getting to know us, they still invited us to visit them. We are very glad they did, because we had a wonderful time in Stuttgart and enjoyed their gracious hospitality.
Jens and Sabine met us at the train station and, shortly thereafter, we were at their home enjoying great German beer and a fabulous home-cooked meal. After so many months on the road, it is always nice to spend time in a real home.
Jens and Sabine were also great tour guides, as they showed us around Stuttgart and the surrounding area. Stuttgart is home to many old and beautiful buildings, as well as a surprising amount of parkland. But its biggest claim to fame is that it is home to Mercedes-Benz and Porsche--it is, quite literally, the motor city of Germany.
Jens and Sabine, who incidentally will marry this November, in central Stuttgart.
Germany loves its beer, and a German institution is the Beer Garden. Here we enjoy a Stuttgart Bier Garten on a warm summer day.
One afternoon we took a scenic boat ride down the Neckar River to the picturesque town of Esslinger. We had bright, sunny weather, as well as a Dixie Land band on board to entertain us with music.
The quaint town of Esslingen, with its characteristic architecture.
During our 4 night stay in Stuttgart, we feasted on home cooking, including fresh tomatoes from the garden. Jens and Sabine were such wonderful hosts, we hope to have the opportunity to show them the same type of hospitality one day in Atlanta.
