Art Nouveau was the new and elegant design of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Here, this style has been preserved in a Metropolitan entrance.
One of the best views of the city of Paris is from the top of the Samaritaine Department Store. We enjoyed a snack as we peered out upon the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame. While Kelly wanted to stay a while at Samaritaine and perhaps do a little shopping, Rich reminded her that we have not worked in a year, and we do not have any shopping money.
Rodin's "The Thinker" ponders world peace as he enjoys the outdoor gardens of the Rodin Museum. Rich and I were very impressed by Rodin's sculptors.
While Napoleon died at the early age of thirty-two, he still managed to conquer and acquire many great empires. Here lies the great, but short, warrior in Les Invalides. The beautiful golden dome of this mausoleum can be seen from many areas of Paris. Napoleon would have been proud to have been buried in such a great place.
Notre Dame Cathedral is seven hundred years old, yet she looks brand new after her recent bath/restoration of her front facade. We were thrilled to see the beautiful cathedral in all of her grandeur. Notre Dame (French for "our Lady") is dedicated to Mary. Both the exterior and the interior are very impressive sights.
The facade of Notre Dame is adorned with Mary and Jesus, as well as the Kings of Judah and many important Saints. The Saint that is carrying his own head here is the beloved St. Denis. While converting pagan Romans to Christianity during the fourth century, Denis, the Bishop, was beheaded by the disapproving Roman authority. Unwilling to die where he had lost his head, he gathered up his belongings, including his head, walked up to a comfortable hill, and passed away there. That is how Montmartre gets its name: Mountain of the martyr.
This is the fabulous view that Quasimoto had up in the tower as he rang the bells of Notre Dame each day. The gargoyles seem to enjoy the view as well, as they have not moved from their spot for hundreds of years.
This Notre Dame gargoyle enjoys the sunset from his perch..
Another gargoyle's view of the city. This time we look upon the River Seine.
