On our second day in Monteverde, we decided that we were going to hike to the San Luis waterfall. We were told that it was a beautiful waterfall that stood at 100 meters above the river. We were also told that it would take us all day if we decided to go by foot. Feeling up to the task, we set out by foot to explore Monteverde and find the waterfall.
Before leaving on our hike to San Luis, we visited the Bird Finca. We did not see a lot of birds, but we did see this radiant rainbow.
Monteverde is known for its cheese and ice cream. Along our journey to the waterfall, we passed the Monteverde cheese factory where we saw them make the cheese. We also felt obliged to try their homemade ice cream. After all, we would need the energy to make it to San Luis.
After a scenic 6 mile hike to San Luis, we had to walk on a poorly marked trail along the trees and river rapids, where we met an obstacle. The end of the trail had been washed out by the heavy rains from the previous evening. We never made it to what was said to be the second largest waterfall in Costa Rica, so we settled for this smaller one.
The 6 mile hike back to the Manakin was almost all up hill, but we managed to have fun and make it back before dark. This is one of the beautiful trees that we saw along the road.
The next day, we visited the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. This time we walked through the cloud forest floor, looking up at the canopy. The cloud forest was filled with a colorful assortment of hummingbirds, so named because they flap their wings at such a high rate of speed just to stay afloat in the air. The violet sabrewing on the left is the largest of all of the hummingbirds found in Costa Rica, while the green and gold hummingbird on the right is the smallest .
The Reserve has put up several hummingbird feeders. However, these birds also find nourishment from the nectar of the many flowers in the cloud forest.
Although not the waterfall we were searching for the day before, this waterfall in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve was beautiful.
An interesting orange berry plant in the Reserve.
These berries looked delicious enough to eat. However, we were satisfied to just look at them.
Mushrooms and other fungi play an important roll in the cloud forest. These mushrooms and green algae help this tree retain moisture
