Mekong Delta Photos
Up

After 2 days in Saigon, we piled in the van and headed south to the Mekong Delta, the most prolific agricultural region of Vietnam and rightly considered the fruit basket, and rice bowl, of the country.  Our home base while there was Cantho, where Mrs. Janzen was born.  The principal attraction is the mighty Mekong River, one of the longest rivers in the world, together with its innumerable tributaries.  Instead of exploring this region by tourist boat, we boarded a local boat and enjoyed an inside view of life on the water.

Commerce on the Mekong.  All of the boats traditionally have two eyes painted on their bow, giving each boat its own character.

The owner of the boat upon which we rode.  She was a gracious host, as we enjoyed our ride from the roof of her boat.  She commented to Mrs. Janzen that we were the first Westerners ever to ride upon her boat.

Transport on the Mekong is, of course, by boat.

More faces of the warm people of the Mekong Delta.  The woman to the left was always smiling.

At Cantho's market, everything is for sale from fruit, vegetables, meats of all types, fish and seafood of all types (much of it still alive), and, of course, ducklings.
