Witnessing Thaipusam was a pretty amazing event. Seeing the sheer number of people, and bearing witness to their unbelievable faith and commitment, was an overwhelming experience.
More pilgrims with milk filled urns.
Large kavadis can be seen above the crowd--each supported by a Hindu devout--as they make the arduous journey through the enormous crowds to the Caves. The heat and humidity, together with the bright sun, did not make things any easier.
A Hindu with a lot of hooks in his back, and limes suspended by hooks in his chest.
In a trance and looking kinda scary.
A man stands defiantly, smoking what seemed to be a cigar (as many did), as though emphasizing that he is feeling no pain.
Young children also made the pilgrimage, usually aided by their family. Seeing the support and help of friends and family was always quite touching.
In addition to wearing an enormous kavadi (whose frame can be seen here), this man pierces his skin with dozens of hooks.
