Welcome to the Selous Game Reserve

The Selous is the largest game reserve in Africa, covering an area of 50,000 square kilometers.  Off the beaten track of safaris, the Selous receives as many visitors in one year as the Serengeti receives in two weeks.  We decided to spend our last few days at the Selous to experience its natural beauty and to see a few more animals.  We were especially hopeful to see the endangered wild dog.

Rich enjoys the view of the huge Rufiji river from outside of our tent.

Boat Safari

Almost immediately after we arrived in the Selous, we went on a boat safari down the river.  The weather was beautiful and the animals were out.

The Selous is host to the greatest number of hippos in the world.  The hippos here at the Selous were very active.  They would run into the water and swim like dolphins when they heard our boat approaching.  Here a hippo yawns as he begins to settle down for his afternoon nap.

We saw many crocodiles large and small crawling along the shores of the river and waiting for dinner to come their way.

A closer look at this crock, and his teeth, shows that he can handle even the largest of prey.

From the river, we are even able to see animals walking along the river's edge.  Here, a buffalo stands above us and reminds us of the bull boards in Spain.

Walking Safari

The Selous is one of the only reserves where you can do a walking safari.  We are joined by a guide and a ranger who carries his gun for our protection.  In the distance are dozens of giraffe that are quite weary of our presence.

A walking safari allows you to see the little things that you may not see from a big Land Rover.  For starters, we saw this beautiful green mamba snake quickly slither from his tree and capture this small lizard.  In this photo he is holding the lizard in his mouth as he prepares to swallow him up whole.

Rich has affectionately dubbed the Selous: "Giraffic Park", as these elegant long necked beauties can be seen everywhere.  It seems only fitting that the giraffe is the national animal of Tanzania.

Continue with us for an intimate elephant experience and a game drive through Giraffic Park.
